BWI and ITUC Urge Release of Sharokh Zamani

In a letter to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, dated April 11, 2014 the BWI and ITUC called for the immediate release of Shahrokh Zamani, Founding Board member of the Syndicate of Painters of Tehran and the Committee to Pursue the Establishment of Workers Organizations. Mr. Sharokh Zamani, was sentenced in 2011 to 11 years in prison by a Trabiz court on charges of organizing opposition groups, acting against national security and propaganda against the regime.

On March 8, 2014 Mr. Zamani and his cell mates conducted a solidarity hunger strike for political prisoners at the Gohar Dasht prison. Immediately following this, the authorities transfer Shahrokh Zamani to the Ghezel Hesar prison, the largest state prison in Iran. This prison, where 13,000 of the 20,000 inmates are incarcerated for drug-related charges, is a dangerous and unsafe prison for political prisoners such as Zamani.

Fearing for the safety of Zamani who has 17 kilos, the BWI and ITUC call on President Rouhami to demonstrate Iran’s willingness to comply with its international obligations including the fundamental rights at work enshrined in the ILO Core Conventions.
